SEATTLE -- Boston Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel was supposed to get a soft outing in his return from left knee surgery, according to manager John Farrell. It didnt work out that way.Mookie Betts homered to lead off the ninth inning, Kimbrel got his 18th save in his return from the disabled list and the Red Sox beat James Paxton and the Seattle Mariners 2-1 on Monday night.Kimbrel made his first appearance since having surgery to repair a medial meniscus tear in his left knee. He allowed a walk, and Kyle Seager reached on a third-strike wild pitch, but Kimbrel got two other strikeouts to end it.As much as we talked before the game about Kimbrel and giving him a little breathing room, that one-run margin wasnt a heck of a lot, Farrell said. He was very good. It looked like he hadnt missed any time.Thats my job, Kimbrel said. I like save situations. It worked out nice.Paxton held Boston to a run and four hits over eight innings before Betts hit his 22nd homer off closer Steve Cishek (2-6), who blew a three-run lead in the ninth inning Sunday against Chicago.Seattle may turn over closing duties to hard-throwing rookie right-hander Edwin Diaz.Well talk about it, Servais said. Well probably take the gas off a little bit and try to get (Cishek) in some better spots, and maybe not when the game is on the line all the time, and get it back going again.Aaron Hill homered off Paxton in the eighth to tie the game 1-1. It was the second straight ninth-inning comeback for Boston, which beat the Angels 5-3 with five two-out runs in their final at-bat Sunday. You have to play 27 outs to beat us, Betts said. Were starting to see that more and more now.Junichi Tazawa (2-1) got the win with a scoreless eighth after Eduardo Rodriguez held Seattle to a run and three hits over 6 1/3 innings.Rodriguez held the Mariners to three baserunners in the first six innings, and only one of his first 19 outs even left the infield.Paxton retired the first seven batters until Sandy Leons one-out single in the third. Hanley Ramirez singled in the fifth and Betts was the first player to reach second with a two-out double in the sixth. All failed to advance.Dae-Ho Lees run-scoring double with one out in the seventh chased Rodriguez, who allowed three hits, two walks and six strikeouts. Robbie Ross Jr. took over and hit Seager with a pitch to load the bases with one out. He then struck out Franklin Gutierrez and Chris Iannetta.Paxton had six strikeouts and no walks.KID COMINGThe Red Sox will promote prospect Andrew Benintendi from Double-A to the majors before Tuesday nights game. The outfielder is one of the top prospects in baseball, hitting .312 with nine homers, 76 RBI and 16 stolen bases this season between Class A Salem and Portland.PITCH FOR PITCHThe Red Sox added Kimbrel off the injured list, just three weeks after his July 11 surgery. To make room, the club optioned RHP Joe Kelly to Triple-A Pawtucket. The Mariners also added a pitcher, RHP Donn Roach from Triple-A Tacoma. He is likely a temporary fix for the teams depleted staff.MIRANDA THURSDAY?The Mariners have not announced a pitcher for Thursdays game, and manager Scott Servais said theres a possibility that lefty Ariel Miranda could pitch. Miranda was acquired from Baltimore for lefty Wade Miley on Sunday.TRAINERS ROOMMariners: RHP Taijuan Walker (right foot tendinitis) had a rehab start for Triple-A Tacoma on Monday. ... SS Ketel Marte (mono), on the DL since July 20, is nearly back to his playing weight. ... RHP Nick Vincent (back strain) will throw a simulated game Tuesday, with Marte facing him. NEW ORLEANS -- With a play some Denver Broncos players called leaper, rookie safeties Justin Simmons and Will Parks combined for the two points that gave the Broncos a 25-23 victory over the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. After Saints quarterback Drew Brees threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Brandin Cooks with 1 minute, 30 seconds to play to tie the game 23-23, New Orleans simply needed the extra point to get the win. As a result, special-teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis made a call and took a risk.Great call by Joe, said Broncos coach Gary Kubiak, adding that its something you work on all the time. Its risky to do, because if you touch somebody you know its a penalty. But there are situations in a game where ... its worth the risk, and that was one of them. Its all or nothing, Simmons said. They make the extra point, the game is pretty much over.At the snap, Simmons leaped over Saints long-snapper Justin Drescher to block the kick, and Parks fielded the bouncing football and started up the left sideline.Parks was not touched by a Saints defender. Broncos cornerbacks Kayvon Webster and Bradley Roby escorted Parks up the sideline as he covered 84 yards for the two points that made the difference.I saw the ball really high in the air, behind the line of scrimmage, so I knew I had to go, Parks said. ...That play, look at that orange pylon go, all I could think about was winning this game for this team. After being reviewed by the replay official to see if Parks stepped out of bounds, the play was upheld. They said upstairs, Coach, hes got a white shoe on; its really, really close. The fact that they called it one way, I think it will stand. So they felt that way, Kubiak said. ...Youre always worried (about a review).I took ballet in fourth or fifth grade, so Ive got toe game, Parks said.Dean Blandino, the NFLs senior vice president of officiating, broke down the play Sunday night on a video released by the league and agreed with all of the rulings on the field.Asked if Parks stepped out, Saints coach Sean Payton said he didnt get a great view of the play.Well, its hard to tell. I think those guys are doing their best to look at it. Hes got white shoes on, thhe sidelines white, so theres not a real good picture -- at least I didnt see one.dddddddddddd So I understand. When told that a lot of fans think Parks stepped out of bounds, Brees said, It doesnt matter. Lets not even get to that point. But Brees did say he was still in a little disbelief after the game. Its tough to play a game like that, fight as hard as we all did, then have it come down to something like that, Brees said. The Saints tried an onside kick after the play, but it was recovered by the Broncos to secure the win.It made everything, Simmons said. ...It was nice today to kind of get our feet wet a little bit to get a game-changing play and help this team get a W.The Broncos block and return was the first such play to provide the winning points in an NFL game and the third return for two points since the NFL began allowing defensive scores on such plays in 2015.The Saints will likely turn the play in to the league in the coming days since some replays show Broncos defensive end Jared Crick, lined up to the defensive left of Drescher, push Dreschers head down after the snap; holding the long-snappers head down is a penalty.Drescher thought he was pulled down on the play.I will have to watch it on film, but it felt like their defensive tackles kind of pulled me forward and down, so I really couldnt pop us as fast, Drescher said. Thats what I felt in the time and the moment.Blandino said it didnt look as if Drescher had been pulled down to the ground.[Cricks] gonna get his hands up on top of the snapper and push him toward the ground. Thats legal, Blandino said. Open-hand push, legal. If there was a grab and a pull, that would be defensive holding. This is a similar concept as an offensive lineman blocking a defensive player. If he can get up on top of that defensive player and push him toward the ground, its legal, versus grabbing and pulling him.More power to them. They had a great scheme, Drescher said. Its frustrating because its a hard way to lose.ESPNs Saints reporter Mike Triplett contributed to this report. ' ' '
