John Daly was painstakingly close to an Olympic skeleton medal in 2014, and when it slipped out of reach in one disastrous moment he insisted that he would never compete again. He was wrong.Daly has unretired, making the surprise announcement on Monday that he will pursue a spot on the team that will represent the U.S. at the 2018 PyeongChang Games. Hes been secretly training in Lake Placid, New York, for the last few weekends -- making 18-hour round-trip drives from Washington for what amounted to eight minutes of time going headfirst down the ice -- and is expected to start competing on lower-level circuits in January.I didnt have anything else that made me feel the way sliding did, Daly said. I have a great life. Im not complaining. But nothing made me feel more alive than the Olympics. So hes back, after trying in vain to convince himself that he didnt need to compete anymore.Daly and U.S. teammate Matt Antoine were neck-and-neck in the race for the bronze medal at the Sochi Games in 2014. On Dalys fourth and final run of the two-day competition, his sled popped out of the starting groove at the top of the track -- sending him into a nasty skid from which he could not recover. He wound up finishing 15th.He officially retired a few weeks later and left the sport, getting a job in medical device sales in Washington and not looking back until earlier this year. He returned to the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency testing pool in March, so he would be eligible just in case he decided to try a comeback to the sport where athletes slide headfirst and reach speeds of 80 mph or more.Couldnt go out like that, Daly said. I owe this to myself and Team USA.Before Daly can compete on the U.S. World Cup team again, he needs to race in five events on three tracks. He expects to satisfy those requirements by competing in Park City, Utah, St. Moritz, Switzerland and Lake Placid -- which in theory would give him a chance to race in the world championships in Sochi or a World Cup race on the 2018 Olympic track in Korea before this season ends. The Olympics are something youve got to want to do, Daly said. Its not like theres a big contract waiting for me. Its got to be the thing you want to do most. The fire inside me got put out real quick after Sochi and I went into a hole. I took off. I moved away. I did something else. That fire is now back. 12 Oz Hydro Flask Kids . -- Lou Brocks shoulder-to-shoulder collision with Bill Freehan during the 1968 World Series and Pete Roses bruising hit on Ray Fosse in the 1970 All-Star game could become relics of baseball history, like the dead-ball era. England coach Eddie Jones believes Australia are the most improved side in the world but also accused the Wallabies of having an illegal scrum ahead of Saturdays Test at Twickenham.Jones declined to go into detail over his misgivings with the Australian scrum, but said he wants to meet referee Jaco Peyper early this week to tell him that they do things illegally.Wallabies coach Michael Cheika shrugged off Jones comments following their defeat in Ireland while Australian forward Dean Mumm said they would pay little attention to the noises emanating from the England camp as they look to Saturdays Test.England head into the match on a 13-match unbeaten run, one which included their 3-0 series triumph on Australian soil in June. Jones says that series victory counts for nothing ahead of this weekends match but has warned his players they will face a much-improved Australian side. What theyve done throughout the Rugby Championship and then come on tour here, is quite brilliant, their attacks become a lot more varied, their alignment is better in attack and defensively theyre making better decisions, Jones said.Key players have come back -- Will Genia at nine whho I know very well is an outstanding player and at his best he was the worlds best half-back.dddddddddddd Hes probably not quite there but hes playing some really good rugby and really adds a solid influencing role in their team.[Reece] Hodge has come in at 12, big strong lad with a big kick, hes added a bit more go-forward to their backline. Ive been real impressed with what theyve done. It makes next weeks game so exciting.Jones said there were a number of bruised bodies in the wake of their 27-14 win over Argentina and may change their training week to allow players to recover for what could be a historic match against the Wallabies. If England beat Australia then they will match the 14-match unbeaten run set by Sir Clive Woodwards 2003 vintage but Jones is paying little attention to records. The unbeaten record is a consequence of us playing well next week, so the only thing we can do next week is play well. So we dont need to talk about records, we dont need to think about them, all we need to think about is playing well. ' ' '
