What do you need to know about last nights big stories? Pierre LeBrun gives us his take on the biggest and best.Knights still need a plan: They have a name, the Vegas Golden Knights. Cant wait for that first game versus the Angeles Kings. OK, OK, I get just one joke. In all seriousness, now we need to see if they have a plan. Front-office types from the other 30 teams have speculated to me about how Las Vegas respected general manager George McPhee will build his team. Does he try for instant results, drafting a more veteran team to create a quick buzz in the first season or two? Or does he go young all the way and who cares how many games they lose in the first few years, as long as a Stanley Cup contender is slowly but surely built through the amateur draft? What I can tell you is that the Vegas front office has not answered this question internally. They have two or three more mock expansion drafts left over the next few months to use different methodologies to that end. How they decide to proceed will greatly influence the age and type of player they go after in the expansion draft.Burns stays a Shark: Speaking of Vegas, I think it was a decent bet the Golden Knights would have given Brent Burns a look, had he gone to free agency after the season. Why not, if youre an expansion team in the worlds entertainment capital, looking to add pizzazz to your hockey entry? Burns, one of his snakes hanging around his neck and perhaps a smaller one roaming in his beard, would have been a fascinating character to unleash on Las Vegas. Theres also the fact that he is one of the NHLs top five defensemen. But of course, its for that reason the San Jose Sharks stepped up to ensure their superstar doesnt hit the market July 1, signing Burns on Tuesday to an eight-year, $64 million deal. Now, it didnt long for people to criticize the term, given that Burns is 31 and will be 40 when the deal expires. But the Sharks were justified in doing this for a bunch of reasons, first among them that you simply cannot replace a player of this unique talent. Thats like asking the Los Angeles Kings to replace Drew Doughty or the Ottawa Senators to replace Erik Karlsson. It would be one thing if the Sharks thought their Stanley Cup window was closing, but with many of their core players in their prime, the only solution was to pay up to keep Burns in the fold. The fact that the contract does not include a no-movement clause and only a limited no-trade clause also affords the Sharks flexibility on the back end of it. But dont count against Burns playing the entirety of this deal. The dude keeps himself in insane physical condition.Matthews just not scoring: Its hard to believe after I was at opening night in Ottawa and witnessed pure magic in Auston Matthews scoring four goals in his debut that there would be a time when we would see him go 13 games without a goal. But thats where it lies now, after the 19-year-old phenom was left off the score sheet in Tuesdays 2-1 loss by the Toronto Maple Leafs to the Carolina Hurricanes. I also think the past few games have begun to affect his confidence -- I mean, how could it not? But I also see a young player who is doing all kinds of good things elsewhere on the ice. He led the team with five takeaways on Tuesday night, while also putting up seven shot attempts. Many a coach would protect a teenage center by starting him on the wing in the first season or two, in order to limit his responsibilities. Think of the way the Montreal Canadiens brought along Alex Galchenyuk, a winger the first 3? years before finally switching to his natural center in the second half of last season. Matthews is learning how to play 200 feet of ice, while playing mostly with two other rookies in William Nylander and Zach Hyman. No veteran insulation. And thats fine. Matthews is a big boy, hell fight through this. And hell come out of this adversity better for it.Camiseta Ousmane Dembele . The 29-year-old Baines has established himself as one of the top attacking full backs in the country and was the subject of two bids from United during the last off-season. Everton manager Roberto Martinez says that keeping Baines at the club is a "massive boost and exciting for the future" because he brings "maturity and football knowledge in a very specialized position on the pitch" and an "infectious and positive influence to the rest of the squad. His achievements are impressive -- hes the highest-earning U.S.-based racehorse of all time -- and his recent victory over Dortmund in the San Diego Handicap was eye-catching and gritty. On Saturday, California Chrome (#1) will run in the $1-million TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar, and hell be facing a deep field that might be the toughest to line up against him since the 2014 Breeders Cup Classic. Debating whether he could be vulnerable to defeat is a whole discussion in and of itself, but lets assume that youre a big fan of California Chrome and want to make money betting him to win. What is the best approach for making a big score?Since hes the 8-5 favorite on the morning line, a straight win bet wont pay very much - a $10 bet at 8-5 would return just $26. So lets instead focus on playing him on top of the trifecta and superfecta and try to identify the horses most likely to round out the top four. The most logical candidates are Beholder (#7), a three-time champion mare who won the Pacific Classic last year, and Dortmund (#8), a Grade 1 winner that was beaten just a half-length by California Chrome in the San Diego Handicap. In terms of accomplishments and speed figures, they are both capable of giving California Chrome a stiff challenge, but all three of these horses share similar running styles - if they get involved in a stiff duel during the race, it wouldnt be surprising if one falters and allows a late-runner to rally and finish in the trifecta.Hoppertunity (#2) is one such horse. Hes incredibly consistent and has finished in the superfecta in 19 of his 20 races. Back in March, he finished a solid third behind Caliifornia Chrome in the Dubai World Cup and after a layoff, he was beaten just 2-? lengths when fourth in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita on June 25.dddddddddddd. However, he missed the Cougar II Handicap last month due to a temperature, and he was doubtful to be entered in the Pacific Classic as recently as a few days ago. Its also worth noting that he finished fourth in his previous two races at Del Mar, and for these reasons, I think he could be vulnerable. In contrast, Hard Aces (#4) enters the Pacific Classic in arguably the best form of his career, with runner-up efforts in the Santa Anita Handicap and Californian Stakes among his performances. Most recently, he showcased a complete change of running style to set a slow pace in the 12-furlong Cougar II Handicap and prevail by a half-length. I think he will relish the distance of the Pacific Classic, and a fast pace would also help his chances - I think he has a big chance to finish on the board.I would also include Dalmore (#9), a 3-year-old that gamely reeled in Danzing Candy to win the 8.5-furlong Affirmed Stakes last month by a half-length. This is a big step up in class, but he strikes me as an improving colt that will enjoy more distance and possibly out-finish many of his older rivals.Wagering Strategy A: Trifectas$5 trifecta: 1 with 7,8 with 7,8 ($10) $2 trifecta: 1 with 7,8 with 4,9 ($8) $2 trifecta: 1 with 4,9 with 4,7,8,9 ($12)Wagering Strategy B: Superfectas$2 superfecta: 1 with 7,8 with 7,8 with 2,4,9 ($12) $1 superfecta: 1 with 7,8 with 4,9 with 2,7,8 ($8) $0.50 superfecta: 1 with 4,9 with 4,7,8,9 with 2,4,7,8,9 ($9)Good luck, and enjoy the race! For more stories like this check out Americas Best Racing.
