ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Jason Jones signed with Detroit this off-season. Willie Young has been on the Lions for a while now. They do have one thing in common, though -- this training camp is a chance for both defensive ends to earn a bigger role for 2013. When Detroit cut veteran Kyle Vanden Bosch and lost Cliff Avril via free agency, the Lions suddenly needed to replace both starting defensive ends from last season. First-round draft pick Ziggy Ansah could fill one of those spots, but the more experienced Jones and Young are competing for playing time as well. Whoever is on the ends of the line will have to produce to prevent offences from gearing up too much against defensive tackles Ndamukong Suh and Nick Fairley. "Weve got two big guys in the middle who are wreaking havoc and causing a lot of trouble and confusion," Young said. "Its going to be critical that we set solid, strong edges, so those guys can play around in the middle." Avril flourished at times in Detroits defensive scheme. He had 29 sacks over the past three seasons before signing with Seattle. The Lions, meanwhile, nabbed a defensive end from the Seahawks when they signed Jones. After 12 games with Seattle last season -- and no starts -- the 6-foot-5, 276-pound Jones returns to the Detroit area. He is from nearby Southfield and went to Eastern Michigan. "Just coming back in and having the opportunity to start in the NFL is big anywhere," Jones said. "Playing with the guys here right now, I think the skys the limit for us." Jones started 28 games in the 2010 and 2011 seasons with the Tennessee Titans. He has 18 1/2 sacks in his five-year career. Although hes never started, Young played all 16 games last season for the Lions. Now Avril and Vanden Bosch are gone, meaning he could be on the field more this year. "Thats a part of the business," Young said. "Its definitely an opportunity for myself and every defensive end." Jones and Ansah are listed as the starters on Detroits depth chart, with Young and Israel Idonije the top backups. Young was drafted in the seventh round in 2010. "I think that he has skills that fit what we need from that position," coach Jim Schwartz said. "Hes playing with another increase in understanding. Hes a young veteran player now. Hes not a young player anymore." Ansah was taken with the fifth overall pick in this years draft. Detroit is counting on the former Brigham Young standout to develop into a star despite limited experience. He grew up in Ghana, playing soccer and basketball, before playing football for the first time in 2010. Schwartz told reporters not to focus too much on whether Ansah works with the starters or the backups during training camp. "Reps are reps in camps. ... The only guys that are worried about what group people are running with are you guys," Schwartz said. "Our guys are just out there practicing and trying to get as many reps as they can and trying to do well in the reps that they get. Ziggy is no different than the other guys in that regard." Once the season starts, Detroits pecking order at defensive end should be a lot more clear. "Ziggy Ansah, Idonije, Jason Jones, just take those three guys and if there was a curtain in front of them, you couldnt pick out who was who," defensive co-ordinator Gunther Cunningham said. "They are really good people. I think that runs through the defence." NOTES: The Lions claimed LB Adrian Moten off waivers. ... On Wednesday, the number of players likely to be disciplined in baseballs latest drug scandal stood at 14. Detroit went out and got itself a new shortstop. Other teams were waiting it out, including the New York Yankees, whose injured star Alex Rodriguez was the biggest name in the investigation of a now-closed Florida clinic. It now appears the probe wont be wrapped up until at least the weekend. At first, Major League Baseball and the union thought talks on the Biogenesis probe could be completed by Friday, but negotiations to avoid grievances are likely to push back announcements until at least Saturday or Sunday, according to a person familiar with the talks. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no public comments were authorized. Both sides felt urgency to complete the process: By the middle of next week, teams will have fewer than 50 games left, which would force players to complete suspensions during the playoffs or at the start of next season. Front and centre in the scandal is Rodriguez, baseballs highest-paid player, the most prominent player linked in media reports over the past seven months to Biogenesis of America, a closed Florida anti-aging clinic accused of distributing banned performance-enhancing drugs. Others accused in the media reports include a trio of 2013 All-Stars: Texas outfielder Nelson Cruz, San Diego shortstop Everth Cabrera and Detroit shortstop Jhonny Peralta. While most of the players face 50-game bans as first offenders, Rodriguez is on track for a lengthier penalty. He could be kicked out of baseball unless he reaches an agreement. The Yankees expect him to be accused of recruiting other athletes for the clinic, attempting to obstruct MLBs investigation, and not being truthful with MLB in the past. Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski protected against a possible suspension of Peralta by acquiring slick-fielding infielder Jose Iglesias from Boston in a three-team trade Tuesday night. "If it were a 15-day thing, like a typical injury, I think we could have comfortably dealt with it with the players we already have," Dombrowski said Wednesday. "But when you start to talk about 50 days and a possible playoff run, we feel better going ahead with Jose." While MLB told the union which players it intends to suspend, it hasnt issued formal notices of discipline. Becausee of that, the countdown hasnt started under baseballs Joint Drug Agreement, which says the suspensions are effective on the third business day after the notice is issued.dddddddddddd The sides also had not yet decided whether suspensions for first-time offenders who challenge the penalty can be announced before an arbitration decision. If some stars knew their seasons were about to be cut short, they werent letting on Wednesday, at least publicly. "I cant talk about nothing right now. Just wait for the news," Cabrera said Wednesday before playing against Cincinnati. Peralta thinks he shouldnt be on the list of players linked to Biogenesis. "Its wrong," he said. "But whatever happens, I need to fight and try to move on." Rodriguez, a three-time MVP and baseballs highest-paid player, is the biggest star ensnared in the probe. He admitted four years ago that he used performance-enhancing substances while with Texas from 2001-03 but repeatedly has denied using them since. Hes been sidelined all season since hip surgery in January and then a quadriceps strain during a minor league rehab assignment in July. The Yankees say hell start another rehab assignment Friday -- Double-A Trenton appeared to be the likely destination. "Hopefully Alex will be back shortly thereafter," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. Rodriguez didnt stop to talk with reporters after his rehab session Wednesday at the teams minor league complex in Tampa, Fla. Toronto outfielder Melky Cabrera, Oakland pitcher Bartolo Colon and San Diego catcher Yasmani Grandal were all suspended for 50 games last year for positive tests for elevated testosterone. MLB informed the union they wont receive additional discipline for that violation, two people familiar with the probe said. They also spoke on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized. "Nothings been told to me," Melky Cabrera said. "I served my suspension last year, but MLB has never told me that its OK now. Im seeing it in the press, but I dont know." Texas was unable to find a replacement bat to fill a void a suspension of Cruz would create. "I dont think anybodys comfortable losing a significant part of your club, but its out of our control," Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said. "We explored some deal like that. They just didnt come to a head. It wasnt for lack of interest or lack of effort. It was more lack of supply and lack of fit, really." ' ' '
