SAN FRANCISCO - Ryan Vogelsong visited the Houston Astros this week and had an uncomfortable feeling about how he might fit in, and he had discussions with other teams during the course of this off-season.Each time, everything pointed him back to the Bay Area and the Giants. His wife, Nicole, loves it, too, and he said she kept chirping in my ear every two seconds.Vogelsong just needed some patience as the Giants figured out the rest of their roster. The free agent right-hander finalized a $4 million, one-year contract Friday to stay with San Francisco, a deal includes an additional $3 million in performance bonuses. When a decision came down, everything kept leading me back to San Francisco. Its where Im supposed to be, Vogelsong said. Ive always considered myself a Giant. Theres not really any place Id rather play.Vogelsong passed a physical and reached the deal three days after general manager Brian Sabean said the pitcher was close to joining another team. Vogelsong met with new Houston manager A.J. Hinch, but wouldnt be specific about what made him uneasy. Some things happened I just wasnt comfortable with. Negotiations kind of broke down after that, Vogelsong said. Time to move on.Vogelsong went 8-13 with a 4.00 ERA in 32 starts last season. The 37-year-old adds depth to a rotation that features ace Madison Bumgarner, Jake Peavy, Tim Hudson, Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, who is working back from elbow surgery that ended his season in July. Vogelsong would likely start until Cain returns, and manager Bruce Bochy has said two-time NL Cy Young Award winner Lincecum will begin the year in the rotation. Bochy prefers right-hander Yusmeiro Petit as a swingman out of the bullpen who can go long in relief. While the Giants pursued Jon Lester, they never expected to land a top-tier starter in free agency. Instead, they re-signed Peavy and Vogelsong and built around a talented pitching staff. San Francsico replaced departed third baseman Pablo Sandoval by acquiring Casey McGehee from Miami. New left fielder Nori Aoki was added this week on a $4.7 million, one-year contract.Vogelsong has spent the past four seasons with San Francisco, winning World Series titles in 2012 and 14. He made four post-season appearances last fall but didnt have a decision. He said some divine intervention was involved this winter.Sometimes patience is the best thing, he said. It might be a little bit easier for me because Im not looking to make the most money, Im not looking to have my ego stroked so to speak.Hes been in a similar position before. In December 2013, Vogelsong signed a $5 million, one-year contract a month after the club didnt exercise a $6.5 million option. That followed an injury-shortened 2013 season in which he went 4-6 with a 5.73 ERA in 19 starts and 103 2-3 innings. He broke two bones in the right pinkie area of his pitching hand and also dislocated a knuckle on a swing May 20, 2013, and underwent surgery the next day. He had five pins inserted in his hand.Vogelsong won 13 in 2011 and 14 the following year. He became one of baseballs feel-good comeback stories in 2011, when he made the All-Star team after joining the Giants rotation first as a fill in for the injured Barry Zito.Vogelsong had toiled through three seasons in Japan before Triple-A stints in 2010 for Philadelphia and the los Angeles Angels. In the Bay Area with the team that originally drafted him in the fifth round in 1998, Vogelsong became a front-line starter at last.Invited to spring training in 2011 on a minor league deal, he went on to win the teams Willie Mac Award — named for Hall of Famer Willie McCovey and is voted on by players, coaches and training staff for the most inspirational Giants player on the field and in the clubhouse. Vogelsong set a career high for wins while going 13-7 with a 2.71 ERA in 30 games and 28 starts. He then received an $8.3 million, two-year contract in January 2012.Vogelsong won three games during the 2012 post-season for the eventual World Series champion Giants, including one during a 4-0 sweep of the Tigers for the teams second championship in three years. We appreciate Ryan signing back with us, Sabean said. Hes been on our radar all off-season, though we at times have pursued other options, we know what Ryan has brought to the table and his contributions have not only been timely but I think contagious to the organization. I think some of our consistency, the hallmark of success is competition and depth, and he certainly has created that by re-signing with us. Lazar Markovic Jersey . “The shootout, theres nothing wrong with it, I think its an exciting part of the game but its just one small aspect,” said Chicago Blackhawks GM Stan Bowman. “Its a skill exhibition. If you can get it back closer to regular hockey and have it decided that way; that would be my preference.” “I dont think its a knock on the shootout, I think more of the managers would like to see it end in overtime,” added Washington Capitals GM George McPhee. With Washington teammate Nene drawing double-teams coming off his big game against the Lakers, Gortat scored 25 points on 11-of-12 shooting and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Wizards to a 100-92 win in overtime over Milwaukee on Wednesday night. "After how well Nene played last night, I knew he would get double-teamed tonight and that would give me some more looks," Gortat said. "I felt great out there and was able to get into a rhythm. It was a lot of fun." John Wall, who had scored more than 30 points in his last three games, added 19 points, 6 assists and 5 steals. Nene finished with nine points a night after getting 30 in a win over Los Angeles. The win was the Wizards third straight and fifth in their last six and came despite the Bucks O.J. Mayo hit a game-tying 3-pointer with 6.9 seconds left to send the game into overtime. Wizards coach Randy Wittman said in past years, his team would have gotten down after Mayos shot. "In past seasons, we would have put our heads down and not competed in the overtime," he said. Wittman was particularly pleased with his teams defence in the fourth quarter and overtime. The Wizards held the Bucks to just Mayos 3-pointer during the last four minutes of the game and to five points in the overtime. The Bucks hit 1 of 8 shots during the last four minutes and 2 of 8 in overtime. "It was not the prettiest win, but in this league any win is a good win," he said. "Im an old-school coach and I believe that defence wins game more than offence. And tonight we really played well late in the game." The loss was the Bucks 10th straight, the longest streak since Milwaukee lost 15 in a row from March 4-30, 1996. Mayo led the Bucks with 21 points and Khris Middleton added 13 points. Bucks coach Larry Drew said the game went to overtime because Milwaukee failed to execute at the end. "Going down the stretch in regulation, we just made some bad plays," he said. "I thought the effort was there. But in close games against a team like Washington, you just have to make plays going down the stretch and we didnt.dddddddddddd" Ersan Ilyasova said the Bucks cannot let the losing streak impact them. "With the losing streak, theres a lot to do in practice, but mentally we have to come together and figure out what to do to start winning games," he said. "Theres a lot of games in front of us and we still have a chance to turn this thing around. " In the overtime, Gortat scored twice and Trevor Ariza hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 1:35 remaining to give Washington a 96-90 lead and the Wizards held on for the win. The Bucks went on a 12-2 run midway through the fourth quarter to grab an 80-78 lead when Brandon Knight scored on a driving layup with 5:53 remaining. Webster hit a 3-pointer from the corner with 57.2 seconds left to tie the game 84-84 and was fouled by Mayo but missed the free throw. Webster was upset about missing the free throw, but pleased with how the Wizards responded to get the win. "When you have team like that which is struggling for an identity, you have to get the win," he said. "It would have been easy for us to struggle down the stretch, but we did what we had to do to get the win." Ariza stole the ball from Knight near midcourt and scored on a layup with 39.8 seconds to go. The Bucks missed two shots and Ariza was then fouled with 12.7 seconds remaining, but hit only one of two free throws to make the score 87-84 and set the stage for Mayos tying 3-pointer. NOTES: Wizards guard Bradley Beal missed his second straight game due to a stress injury to his right fibula. Beal leads the NBA with 40.2 minutes per game and is averaging 20.6 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.5 assists. ... Bucks centre Zaza Pachulia hit 1 of 2 free throws in the game. Entering the game, Pachulia had missed just 2 of his 35 free throws this season. The Bucks unveiled the teams new court for the game. The court was to be used at the beginning of the season, but had to be resurfaced after players slipped during an Oct. 25th pre-season game, forcing the contest to be cancelled. ' ' '
