FLORHAM PARK, N.J. - No bold statements. No wild guarantees.Just two serious football guys from New Jersey aiming to turn the New York Jets fortunes around.Coach Todd Bowles and general manager Mike Maccagnan presented a united front as a new era took flight for the Jets on Wednesday during a packed and mostly low-key news conference that formally introduced the pair.Going forward, Bowles said with a big smile, its going to be a dream working with this guy.Maccagnan was hired last Tuesday to replace the fired John Idzik. Bowles was signed a day later to replace Rex Ryan. And unlike Ryans first brash, headline-making news conference with the Jets in 2009, the more understated Bowles offered no Super Bowl guarantees but rather modest goals focused on restoring a winning approach to a franchise that has missed the playoffs for four straight seasons. Were going to be a tough team, Bowles promised, an intelligent team. Were going to do things the right way. ... Were going to try to build a championship team here, and thats my only job.A few months into his tenure, Ryan declared that he didnt come to New York to kiss (Bill) Belichicks rings. Bowles was asked about those same rings, and managed to not provide the New England Patriots with any bulletin board material.Im going to work on getting my own rings, he said, joking. Theyre the cream of the crop of the division. Thats why theyre in the Super Bowl. Theyre somewhere that were striving to get to and thats what were going to work toward. The former Arizona Cardinals defensive co-ordinator also insisted that he will bring a new attitude to his players, a winning approach thats sorely needed after a 4-12 season. We have to teach them our culture, Bowles said. Not that the other culture was bad, but it didnt win. This is a homecoming of sorts for both Bowles, who grew up in Elizabeth, about 19 miles southeast of the facility and was the Jets secondary coach in 2000, and Maccagnan, whos from Hightstown, about 50 miles south of team headquarters. They both know the history of the franchise, from Broadway Joe making good on his Super Bowl guarantee in 1969 to the Jets failure to make the big game since. Both Bowles and Maccagnan used the word dream when they described their opportunity, and owner Woody Johnson declared that his two big hires were the perfect hires to get things turned around. These gentlemen, in my estimation, Johnson said, are the people.Maccagnan, Houstons former director of college scouting, said theres a good foundation in place on the Jets roster, and he typically would like to build through the draft but indicated the team is still formulating its off-season approach. All three men sat at a table in front of the teams auditorium — appropriately decked out in green ties — and preached the value of being on the same page. Johnson also made it clear that he likes the idea that Bowles will be focused on all three phases of the team — defence, offence and special teams — something that the defensive-minded Ryan was often criticized for not doing.Bowles, who spent the last two seasons running Arizonas defence, wont be calling the plays on defence; thatll be up to his still-unnamed co-ordinator, but hell have input. Same for the offence, which will be run by Chan Gailey, who was hired Tuesday after being a priority for Bowles because of his ability to get the most out of his players.Bowles appeared to loosen up as the news conference went along, cracking a few jokes along the way and showing off some of his personality. When asked to describe himself, Bowles had the room laughing.Theres a sarcastic side, he said, smiling. Theres a comedy side. Theres a serious side. Im sort of the male Sybil.Maccagnan was mostly soft-spoken and all business when he took questions. He reminisced about when he and Bowles met while they were with the Redskins in the late-1980s, back when Maccagnan was an intern in the front office, and Bowles was a safety. The two didnt get to know each other well then — but met again last week when Maccagnan picked up Bowles from the airport, and they quickly determined they were a good match as GM and coach. It was a very natural fit, Maccagnan said. It was just one of those situations that just felt right. I am very excited about going to war here with Todd here for the next few years.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP_NFLTrayvon Mullen Raiders Jersey . General Manager Sam Presti said the three-time All-Star had knee swelling that would not subside, and the procedure was intended to solve the problem. He said doctors determined that a loose stitch was to blame for the swelling, that Westbrooks lateral meniscus has healed properly and the procedure was successful. Johnathan Abram Raiders Jersey . Marcus Allen Youth Jersey . "Weve given ourselves now a tougher task," said Carlyle after the Friday practice, the Toronto head coach notably chipper and upbeat throughout. "But the bottom line is we just have to win our share of games [and] not worry about what anybody else is doing. MINNEAPOLIS -- R.A. Dickey has found a rhythm late in this lost season for Toronto. The Blue Jays are buried in last place, but Dickey hasnt given up. Dickey pitched into the seventh inning, and the Blue Jays hung on for a 6-5 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Friday night. "I feel good. I feel like Ive gotten stronger as the year has gone on. I feel like Ive been able to carry my workload just fine," Dickey said. "Ive got four more starts left, and hopefully Ill be able to log a lot more innings." Dickey is three full innings from reaching the 200-inning mark for a third straight season. Winning his third straight start, Dickey gave up seven hits and three runs to a Twins team he was a reliever for in 2009. He struck out four and walked one to beat former New York Mets teammate Mike Pelfrey after losing to him in Toronto in July. "You set some goals for yourself, and hopefully you can get above 200 innings and win close to 15 games," Dickey said. "Those are all good benchmarks, but at this point you still have to be careful not to get too far ahead of yourself." Jose Reyes reached base all four times and sparked a five-run second against Pelfrey (5-11) with an RBI single. Brett Lawrie hit a two-run single and Moises Sierra followed with a two-run double in that inning. "Theyre doing a nice job," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of the influx of young players in the lineup. "This is their opportunity, and theyre trying to take advantage of it." Casey Janssen gave up a home run to rookie catcher Josmil Pinto in the ninth, but he closed it out for his 28th save in 30 tries on a strikeout-caught stealing double play. "Casey bends sometimes, but he doesnt break," Gibbons said. After acquiring the 2012 NL Cy Young Award winner from the Mets in a seven-player trade, one of many bold moves last winter, this season hasnt gone the way the Blue Jays or the 38-year-old knuckleballer wanted despite the arrival of several high-profile players. Only lowly Houston has a higher team ERA in the majors. Lately, theyve been a little better. This was Torontos eighth victory in the past 11 games. Over Dickeys past eight turns, effectively changing speeds more than usual, hes 4-1 with a 3.02 ERA. Blue Jays starters are 8-2 with a 2.93 ERA in the past 11 games. With Justin Morneau now playing for Pittsburgh and Joe Mauer still on the disabled list due to concussion symptoms, there wasnt much resistance for Dickey.dddddddddddd Chris Colabello, the fill-in for Morneau at first base, had three RBIs. Pinto had two more hits and is 9 for 14 to start his career. With two on and two out after an RBI single by Trevor Plouffe in the eighth against Dustin McGowan, Colabello came up as the go-ahead run. But he struck out on a full-count fastball from the right-hander. "After facing a guy whos not quite overpowering your first three at-bats," Colabello said of facing McGowan after Dickey. "I didnt really get much to hit that at-bat, but I think I would have liked to have had a little bit better at-bat in general." In the seventh, after Oswaldo Arcia doubled, Dickeys left leg slipped on the dirt and rolled underneath him during one of his deliveries to Colabello. A couple of pitches later, Colabello, the International League MVP despite playing only 89 games for Triple-A Rochester, smacked a 2-1 fastball into the bullpen behind left-centre field to bring the Twins within three runs. Dickey said he overexposed that pitch, working with such a big lead early. When Gibbons pulled Dickey with one out, the right-hander was shaking his head as he walked by. "I felt like I couldve gone seven innings very easily. I had a little lapse there in the seventh, but I didnt feel like things were spinning out of control," Dickey said. "But at the end of the day its his call, and I respect that." While full counts, frustrated pacing around the mound and sub-six-inning starts have been the story of Pelfreys summer, he turned a corner in August. That progress was gone by the second inning, when the Blue Jays battered his pitches all over the outfield. He steadied himself and retired nine of the last 10 batters he faced, but the damage was done. Pelfrey completed six innings, giving up six hits and six runs, five earned. He struck out seven and walked two. "Hes a workhorse. Hes always been that guy," Dickey said, adding: "Kudos to him for kind of gutting one out." NOTES: Twins GM Terry Ryan on Mauer returning this season: "I dont think theres any doubt thats going to happen." ... SS Pedro Florimon had two errors, one fielding and one throwing. ... The Blue Jays are 9-3 all time at Target Field. ... The Twins will send RHP Kevin Correia (9-10, 4.18 ERA) to the mound on Saturday night, and LHP J.A.
