Luke Del Rio will be the starting quarterback for Floridas season opener, Gators coach Jim McElwain announced Thursday.Del Rio, who has made stops at Alabama and Oregon State before transferring to Florida, was long considered the front-runner for the starting job this offseason over senior Austin Appleby and true freshmen Feleipe Franks and Kyle Trask.The Gators open the season at home vs. Massachusetts on Sept. 3.Del Rio had a strong spring, finishing with a 10-for-11 passing performance for 176 yards and two touchdowns in the Gators Orange and Blue Debut spring game.A redshirt sophomore, he began his career at Alabama in 2013 as a walk-on, transferred to Oregon State for the 2014 season and arrived at Florida before the 2015 season but had to sit out because of NCAA transfer rules. He has appeared in three games in his career, all at Oregon State in 2014, going 8-for-18 passing for 141 yards.He will be the seventh starting quarterback for the Gators since the 2011 season.
