Even the guys who tote the ball recognize that the NFL is a passers league. No argument here.As this week shows, however, running backs still have a prime role in the outcome of games. When the weather turns cool, then cold, then frigid, and the winds begin to whip on the tundras, they will become even more critical. So it was enlightening to see runners young and old making a difference -- or keeping their teams in games. From veterans Frank Gore, Jonathan Stewart and especially LeSean McCoy , to kids such as rookie sensation Ezekiel Elliott, Spencer Ware, Matt Jones and Jay Ajayi, it was impressive, win or lose.McCoy and Gore have all-star credentials and are showing they remain dangerous and dependable. McCoy ran 19 times for 140 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Bills, who want to pound opponents on the ground, thumped the 49ers 45-16 with their best rushing performance in 24 years. Gore, at 33, became the first Colt in 3 1/2 years to rush for more than 100 yards, getting 106 in a 26-23 loss at Houston.Hes just very dynamic, Bills quarterback Tyrod Taylor, a pretty good runner himself, said of McCoy. Ive said this before. Whether its in the running game or the passing game, hes a playmaker. He wants the ball, and when he gets the ball he knows what to do with it, and he can create plays. Some of those plays he made out there from the backfield position, there are only one or two guys -- maybe just him -- who can do that in the National Football League. Its not just him Tyrod, though few runners have as good a pedigree or nickname, Shady, as McCoy.You can be sure Bills coach Rex Ryan will keep feeding McCoy the ball, too.I think, talking to LeSean, he was really disappointed how he played last year, Ryan said. And all of us as we know, and Ive told him several times, like all of us here in Buffalo, we think, `Hey man, youve played great. And hes like, `No, I can play better. And I guess he was right, but we would have been happy with how he played last year.Ware, Jones and Ajayi werent big factors last year. Ware had 72 carries for Kansas City, though he scored six times; Jones rushed 144 times for 490 yards as a backup to Alfred Morris in Washington. Ajayi barely saw the field in Miami with 49 carries. On Sunday, they were prime-timers as Ware went for 131 yards and a touchdown on 34 runs, Jones had 135 on 16 and scored once, while Ajayi had a breakout game in a stunning upset of Pittsburgh with 204 yards on 25 carries and two scores -- including a clinching 62-yard scamper. From last week, coach (Adam) Gase told me that he would feature me more in the run game and he would try to get me a good amount of touches, said Ajayi, whose previous high was 13 carries. The Dolphins had to do something with their offense stagnant and their season spiraling away. Ajayi was the answer, and he certainly will get more opportunities because the Dolphins air game is so inconsistent.Wares numbers are even more impressive because hes one of three RBs the Chiefs can use moving forward. Their star, Jamaal Charles, finally is back from a long rehab after knee surgery, and Charcandrick West showed last year with Charles sidelined that he can be the main man behind Alex Smith.Having them both out there, thats a win-win, I think, coach Andy Reid said of Ware and Charles. Theyre completely different players, and they both did a nice job.Jones also was part of a committee of runners. Washington already has a solid corps of receivers, particularly when tight end Jordan Reed is healthy -- he missed the win over Philadelphia with a concussion. In Jones, Robert Kelley and Chris Thompson, they could find plenty of offensive balance. That trio combined for 231 yards and a touchdown against the Eagles.I think just us three guys coming together and believing in ourselves and going out there and doing things we know we can do, Kelley said. Thats why they got us here.Even more promising for the rushing games influence in the NFL moving forward in 2016 is that such stars as LeVeon Bell, DeMarco Murray, Todd Gurley and Doug Martin werent factors in Week 6. Look for them to be heading into November and December.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP-NFLWholesale Shoes China Free Shipping . Offspinner John Nyumbu could make a return to Zimbabwes Test side in a bid to balance out an attack that had to rely on part-time bowlers in the first Test against New Zealand. Nyumbu could play as a second specialist spinner to captain Graeme Cremer to back up a pace pack that could also see a return for Njabulo Ncube, whose only Test was in Bulawayo against New Zealand in 2011. The more experienced seamer Chris Mpofu, who has been training with the team, could lead the attack. Both Nyumbu and Mpofu have been training with Zimbabwes squad over the last three days although neither was included in the squad for the first Test.Nyumbu started with a five-for on Test debut two years ago against South Africa, but has played only two Tests overall as he went wicketless against Bangladesh in October 2014. Even though he has been among the wickets for Tuskers this year in domestic cricket, he bowled 28 overs without any returns against South Africa A last month.Should the changes take place, Zimbabwes attack will more closely resemble the New Zealand one that took 20 wickets in the first Test. New Zealand took the field with three frontline quicks - Tim Southee, Trent Boult and Neil Wagner - and two specialist spinners - Ish Sodhi and Mitchell Santner. A Zimbabwe pace pack of Mpofu, Ncube and Donald Tiripano with Cremer, Nyumbu and Prince Masvaure as a medium-pace option may give them the resources to make more inroads than the six New Zealand wickets they took. Both teams are still likely to find taking wickets even more difficult starting Thursday on what is likely to be an even flatter surface for the second Test. The pitch being prepared has been rolled very hard and promises plenty of runs, which New Zealand have already predicted. We know the pitch doesnt offer a lot so its pretty crucial with that new ball, Santner, the left-arm spinning allrounder said. If we dont take wickets with the new ball, its about building that pressure on a reasonably flat wicket. We know its going to be a little bit tough through the middle.dddddddddddd. We just have to stick at it.Neither Santner nor Sodhi found the same amount of turn Cremer did out of the rough in the first Test, but for Santner it was still more than how much he gets at home. Theres a little bit more for the spinners in Bulawayo which I am happy with compared to those green ones back home, he said. There was a little bit of spin near the end, slow turn. Youve got to really work hard though. Its not sharp turn.Santner missed New Zealands limited-overs tour of Africa last year with a fractured thumb and since his recovery he has been drafted back in, hoping to make full use of his opportunity. Ive been lucky enough to make this tour. This time last year, I broke my thumb a couple days before we were supposed to go, he said. You cant ask more for the weather. I dont think there has been a cloud in the sky since weve been here. Its awesome.New Zealand took three days off following their four-day victory last week and a night at Heath Streaks game-farm outside Bulawayo before returning to training on Thursday. Coach Mike Hesson missed their session with a migraine and may find he has other headaches as well.Part of his selection conundrum will be if he should rest Wagner, whose calf was strapped during Zimbabwes second innings, and give one of Doug Bracewell and Matt Henry a go. He will also be pondering whether to include uncapped batsman Jeet Raval, perhaps in place of Martin Guptill.Zimbabwe, who had Thursday off after three days of training that included a visit to a local school, also have to consider their top two. Tino Mawoyo may come into consideration after an injury to his right thumb kept him out of the first match. Mawoyo was hit by Southee during the warm-up match in Harare and will undergo a fitness test on Friday to determine his availability. ' ' '
