OXNARD, Calif. -- Dallas Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick is getting a four-game suspension for violating the leagues substance abuse policy. Team owner Jerry Jones told reporters at a media party in Malibu, California, on Monday night that Scandrick tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs and lost an appeal on the ban. Scandrick will be eligible to return Oct. 5 against Houston. He will miss the opener against San Francisco, and his final game on the sidelines will be against Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints, who set an NFL record with 40 first downs against Dallas last year. The Cowboys are practicing with Oakland on Tuesday and Wednesday at training camp in Oxnard. They break camp Friday. Scandrick, who is going into his seventh season, became a starter last year when former top 10 pick Morris Claiborne struggled. Now Claiborne is battling tendinitis in his right knee and missed the preseason opener for the third time in his three seasons in Dallas. Brandon Carr, the other starter, missed the first two weeks of camp to be with his mother in the final days of her battle against breast cancer. He might only play one preseason game but is expected to be ready for the regular season. The Cowboys had to sign two defensive backs just to get through the preseason opener against the Chargers last week. Theyre likely to keep scouring the waiver wire, perhaps even looking for a veteran to give them depth while Scandrick is out. B.W. Webb, a fourth-round pick last year, hasnt shown that hes ready to be a starter. Terrance Mitchell, a rookie seventh-round pick out of Oregon, could get a longer look while Scandrick is sidelined. Dreger says Clarkson is going to get a handsome contract perhaps somewhere north of $6 million per year, but Toronto will only sign Clarkson "if the fit is right financially." Ottawa Senators GM Bryan Murray confirmed Thursday that the club has met with Clarkson. Bidding for Bozak LeBrun also reports that the Toronto Maple Leafs are still in the mix to re-signing Tyler Bozak, but the Dallas Stars, St. Louis Blues, Calgary Flames, Anaheim Ducks and Detroit Red Wings are among the other teams that have kicked the tires on the free agent centre. LeBrun suspects that Bozak is seeking a deal of five years or more. Dreger adds that Bozaks negotiation with the Maple Leafs could impact Phil Kessels future with the club as well. Brad Ziemer of The Vancouver Sun writes that Keith Ballards compliance buyout gives the Canucks almost $7.5 million of cap space, but they still have to fill out seven spots on their 23-man roster. Ziemer adds that defenceman Chris Tanev, a restricted free agent, could more than double last seasons $900,000 salary. That, along with getting Dale Weise locked up leaves the Canucks with about $5 million on five players. As a result, Ziemer writes that theyre not expected to pitch for names like Jarome Iginla, David Clarkson, Ryane Clowe and Nathan Horton.
