JACKSONVILLE https://www.jaguarsfanstore.com/Cody-Kessler-Jersey , Fla. (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars have to find more options for rookie quarterback Gardner Minshew.Chris Conley? Dede Westbrook? Maybe rookie tight end Josh Oliver?New Orleans clamped down on burgeoning receiver DJ Chark in its 13-6 victory at Jacksonville on Sunday, and the Jaguars failed to adjust to the Saints’ two-man scheme. The Saints bracketed Chark, who entered the game as the AFC’s leading receiver, and played man-to-man coverage everywhere else. They kept Minshew in the pocket and gambled that Jacksonville wouldn’t be able to win one-on-one matchups or exploit the middle of the field. The Jaguars (2-4) looked lost most of the game, managing 11 first downs, a season-low 226 yards and just two field goals. It could serve as a blueprint on how to defend Jacksonville as well as a wake-up call for the Jaguars , who play at winless Cincinnati (0-6) this Sunday.“I’ll take full responsibility for that in my room,” Conley said. “We have to be ready for that. We can’t blink. We can’t hesitate. We have to play fast. We didn’t play fast enough for (Minshew). We didn’t get open fast enough.”Minshew completed 14 of 29 passes for 163 yards and an interception, his worst outing since replacing Nick Foles (broken collarbone) in the season opener.Chark finished with three receptions for 43 yards. Conley was held without a catch for the first time this season. Westbrook caught three passes for 53 yards.“We’ve got to do a good job of scheming things up and getting guys open,” coach Doug Marrone said. “That’s where it comes down to us.”WHAT’S WORKINGLeonard Fournette had 118 yards from scrimmage, grinding out yards on the ground and in the air. He ran 20 times for 72 yards and had six receptions for 46 yards. He failed to break a long run for the first time in four games.Marrone blamed the team’s third-down woes (4 of 14) for Fournette not getting more touches.“It’s very difficult to get a run-game going when you’re not making third downs,” he said.WHAT NEEDS HELPThe tight end position.Jacksonville already lost James O’Shaughnessy (knee) for the season and could be without Geoff Swaim (concussion) for several weeks. The team signed Ben Koyack off the street last week and has Seth DeValve https://www.jaguarsfanstore.com , but it’s clear the Jags need Oliver to get healthy.Oliver, a third-round draft pick out of San Jose State, suffered a “significant” hamstring injury during practice on Aug. 1. He returned to practice late last month but has yet to make his NFL debut.STOCK UPLinebacker Najee Goode made his first start with Jacksonville and played well. He finished with six tackles, including a sack, as the Jags allowed 104 yards rushing.Goode replaced benched rookie Quincy Williams in the fourth quarter at Carolina last week. Jacksonville surrendered 285 yards rushing to the Panthers, the second most in the franchise history, and Williams was blamed for many of the defense’s gap-integrity issues.STOCK DOWNMinshew Mania has been silenced, at least for a week.Minshew’s struggles came on the same day the Jaguars, in conjunction with the NFL, handed out more than 30,000 “Minshew mustaches” at the gates. It also came with a large number of people from his hometown — Brandon, Mississippi — on hand for the “Brandon Bowl.”Minshew and Saints linebacker Demario Davis both graduated from Brandon High School and are two of four NFL players from the town just east of Jackson.Minshew and Davis exchanged a hug and jerseys after the game.INJUREDReceiver Marqise Lee Jacksonville Jaguars Customized Jerseys , who missed all of last season after tearing three ligaments in his left knee, injured his right foot in the third quarter and had to be helped to the locker room.KEY NUMBER51.4 — Minshew’s QB rating. It was more than double that over his first five games.NEXT STEPSIt might be time to put disgruntled cornerback Jalen Ramsey on injured reserve. JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Between wrist surgery, signing a $54 million contract and nearly getting robbed, Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles had quite the start to the offseason. His next phase probably won’t create as much buzz, but it’s much more important to the team’s success in 2018.Bortles opened organized team activities Tuesday behind a revamped offensive line and with three new passing targets — all part of a plan to improve an offense that featured the league’s top rushing attack last season.More Jacksonville Jaguars newsJaguars will be without starting CB A.J. I think that Blake is in a good spot as far as what he knows of the offense, what we want to do. It’s just another year.“I think that’s why you see those quarterbacks that stay in these systems for a long period of time and play for a long period of time that do such a good job.”Bortles threw for 3 Jacksonville Jaguars T-Shirts ,687 yards, with 21 touchdowns and a career-low 13 interceptions in 2017. He was at his best in the postseason, throwing for 594 yards and three scores without a turnover.Interceptions and fumbles were among Bortles’ biggest faults during his first three years in the league. He limited them down the stretch last season and eliminated them in the playoffs, helping the Jaguars reach the AFC championship game.“You want to have that every game,” said Bortles, who had surgery to repair a partially torn ligament in his right wrist in late January. “Just wanting to make sure that no matter what I did I gave us a chance to win. I knew that if I didn’t turn the ball over we’re going to have a chance to win every game. That should be and it is my mindset every single game we play. I think it was only heightened in the playoffs to make sure I wasn’t the reason we couldn’t win the game.”The Jaguars rewarded Bortles with a three-year contract that included $26.5 million guaranteed, making him the team’s starter for at least the next two seasons.“The contract stuff doesn’t really change anything about how I think or how I approach every day,” he said. The biggest difference, he said, is having continuity. The Jaguars returned their entire coaching staff, giving Bortles and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett a solid foundation to start from during OTAs.“We talked about it this morning: Kind of taking it to the next level,” said Bortles https://www.jaguarsfanstore.com/hats , who didn’t have the freedom to audible early last season. “He kind of gave me the green light to go ahead … as far as what you’re doing versus all the different looks and not just running the play called, (but) getting yourself in the best play possible.”Bortles will have a much different supporting cast to work with in 2018.Donte Moncrief and rookie DJ Chark replaced receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns, and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins stepped in for longtime starter Marcedes Lewis.Moncrief and Chark are expected to bring more speed to Jacksonville’s offense, which coaches are counting on to help loosen up defenses and create more room for bruising running back Leonard Fournette. The addition of All-Pro guard Andrew Norwell should help, too.Bortles will use the next few months to build a rapport with those newcomers. If it includes any dinners, Bortles probably will be sure to lock his truck.Bortles had his wallet stolen and pickup truck nearly hijacked earlier this month from teammate Brandon Linder‘s driveway during an offensive line dinner. An 18-year-old Jacksonville man was arrested and charged with auto theft, auto burglary and trespassing.Bortles left his keys inside his unlocked truck, but other vehicles parked around it prevented the man from driving away.“He checked my truck out a little bit and left it nice and clean for me,” joked Bortles, who has since teamed up with local police to help prevent automobile burglaries. “It was all right. … Glad to be back playing football, running around. It feels good to kind of be back to some familiarity.”
