Twenty-six years ago this week -- the exact date was July 11, 1990 -- the Chicago White Sox tried something a little daring for their game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The Sox dressed in uniforms based on the teams 1917 unis.Going along with the old-school vibe, general admission tickets were 50 cents and popcorn was sold for a nickel. Comiskey Parks public address system was shut down for the day, and lineups were announced via a megaphone. Most of the advertisements in the ballpark were covered up. Men dressed in straw hats and bow ties, and women in long skirts and bonnets. There was a barbershop quartet, a hand-operated scoreboard, and an organ-grinder with a monkey.A note in the scorecard explained what was going on. Welcome to Turn Back the Clock Day at Comiskey Park, it began. To help savor the final season at historic Comiskey, the White Sox want you to be able to look at the field, squint, and perhaps capture the flavor of what it was like here in 1917, the last year the Sox were World Champions. To help you imagine, the team will appear in 1917 replica uniforms made of current cloth but made along the lines of bygone days. And so began the first attempt at what has now become a common promotion in the sports world: the throwback game. Teams typically no longer bother with most of the nostalgic trappings (tough break for the organ-grinder industry), but the key component -- the use of throwback uniforms -- has remained. Throwbacks have become so firmly established in the uni-verse, and are such reliable crowd-pleasers, that its easy to forget how revolutionary they once seemed, especially on that day in Chicago in 1990.Steve Winkler, a lifelong Chicagoan who works for the Cook County Clerks office, was one of the 40,666 fans who attended that game. He was 24 years old at the time and remembers it very clearly.I was coaching Little League, and I took about 10 or 15 kids and adults to the game with me, because the ticket prices were so low, he said. The uniforms were terrific -- they were very authentic. Or as authentic as they could be. Of course, the kids didnt quite grasp the whole thing, so the adults were explaining everything to them.Michael James, a data analyst and Brewers fan from Milwaukee, drove down to Chicago that day with a friend. I thought the uniforms were a brilliant idea, James said. I was a little disappointed the Brewers didnt do something with their uniforms, but they were only a 20-year-old team at the time, so they didnt have much of a history to dip back into.Winkler and James both enjoy the feeling of having been in on the ground floor of the throwback revolution. Anytime someone does a throwback game, I think, Yeah, I was there for that first one, James said.(Winkler, though, takes a dim view of teams that trot out throwback uniforms but dont include all the retro-themed trimmings that the White Sox provided back in 1990. Amateurs, he sniffs.)It didnt take other sports long to be bitten by the throwback bug. Heres a look at the first throwback uniforms worn by the other major North American pro leagues, presented in the order in which they jumped aboard the throwback bandwagon:NHL: The NHL introduced throwbacks for its 1991-92 season, when the league was celebrating its 75th anniversary. The Original Six teams -- the Blackhawks, Bruins, Canadiens, Maple Leafs, Rangers and Red Wings -- all added throwback uniforms to their wardrobes that season.NFL: The first NFL team to turn back the clock was the 1993 Jets, who commemorated the 25th anniversary of their Super Bowl III-winning season by wearing a throwback uniform -- sort of. Instead of new white helmets, the Jets used their existing green helmet shells, adorned with a green version of their classic 1960s logo. The rest of the NFL took the throwback plunge the following season, as the league marked its 75th anniversary with a wide-ranging series of throwbacks.NBA: The NBA was the last of the major pro leagues to embrace the throwback trend, finally succumbing in 1996-97 as part of the leagues 50th anniversary.By now, the vast majority of major-level pro teams have worn throwbacks at some point. Three of them have even done so while competing for a championship. In 1994, the San Francisco 49ers were so successful while wearing their throwbacks during the regular season that they asked the NFL for permission to wear them during the postseason, which culminated in their victory over the San Diego Chargers in Super Bowl XXIX.In the 2003 NBA Finals, the New Jersey Nets revived their Dr. J-era throwbacks, although that move wasnt enough to keep them afloat against the San Antonio Spurs. And earlier this year, the Pittsburgh Penguins wore their throwbacks while defeating the San Jose Sharks in the Stanley Cup finals. And if a team hasnt existed long enough to have a throwback design, it can still play along by creating a fauxback, a move pioneered by the Tampa Bay Rays in 2012.Its appropriate that the White Sox were the ones to pioneer the throwback craze, because theyve had some pretty bizarre uniforms over the years, from their untucked leisure suits to their beach blanket design with the uni number on the leg and their reverse-field stirrups (a rare instance of the White Sox living up to their name!). After 26 years, theyve now tried throwback versions of many of those designs, but theres one Sox uni that Winkler would still like to see.The shorts, he says. Thats the one Im waiting for. ?Hes not the only one. Come on, Sox -- make it happen.(Special thanks to Mike Chamernik and Eric Pytel for their research assistance.)Would you like to nominate a uniform, uni element, or event to be showcased in a future Friday Flashback installment? Englands Tony Bellew has certainly had his disappointments inside the boxing ring. There was his majority-decision loss to Nathan Cleverly in a challenge for a light heavyweight world title in 2011.Bellews second shot at a world title went even worse. He traveled to Quebec City in 2013 and was dominated in a sixth-round knockout loss to world champion Adonis Stevenson. But then Bellew moved up to the cruiserweight division, where he has thrived. He has won seven fights in a row since the weight-class change, including an impressive and explosive third-round knockout of dangerous puncher Ilunga Junior Makabu on May 29 to win a vacant cruiserweight world title.Filled with confidence and in a groove over the past two years, Bellew, who survived a first-round knockdown by Makabu, is excited for his first title defense, which will come against BJ Flores on Saturday at Echo Arena in Liverpool, England, Bellews hometown. One of the reasons for the excitement is because the 33-year-old Bellew (27-2-1, 17 KOs) doesnt particularly care for Flores, best known these days to American fight fans as an analyst on NBCs Premier Boxing Champions cards. The fight was made because of his mouth, Bellew said. Hes been following me around for two years, saying Im not a cruiserweight, Im a light heavyweight, saying I couldnt live with him. On Saturday night I am going to show him what I can do.When I say something, I mean it. Everything hes said hes meant it and hes going to pay for it on Saturday night. Hes had [an interim] world title [fight], whereas Ive done it the hard way. Ive earned every single thing that Ive got. Ive boxed in final eliminators against top fighters, and its going to show on Saturday night.Flores, 37, of Chandler, Arizona, has been somewhat inactive. He boxed only once in 2015, losing a debatable unanimous decision to Beibut Shumenov for an interim title in July. A 10-month layoff followed before Flores (32-2-1, 20 KOs) shook off the rust with a six-round decision win against journeyman Roberto Santos in May.The so-called loss to Shumenov still burns, Flores said. I know guys cry about being robbed all the time, but in that fight, I really was robbed. I outlanded the guy by such a clear margin. If I had won that fight, or if I had been given the decision I clearly deserved, it would be a big unification fight [with Bellew].I love this fight as it is a second opportunity for me, and to beat Bellew in front of his hometown fans, it would be the ultimate example of how perseverance can pay off. After Bellew won the 200-pound world title belt, he aand Flores began a heated exchange on social media.dddddddddddd That interaction was partly responsible for Flores landing the opportunity, and when the fight was first announced Bellew said he would smash BJ Flores to bits and be the first man to stop him. Hes been mouthing off and following me around for a couple of years and Im just a little bit fed up with him now.But Flores said he is unmoved by Bellews talk of a brutal knockout prediction. He even gave him props for it.Ive never been KOd. Its been a very long while since Ive been knocked down, and Tony will come forward, Flores said. Ive rarely been hurt in my career, ever, not since my younger days. As I say, this fight has all the ingredients. I like the way he speaks his mind and how he believes in himself. He cant talk the way he has been doing and then run in the fight the way Shumenov did. Whatever gets him motivated for the fight, then thats what hes going to do. Hell see what Ive got to say in the first round. He says hes going to do this or that. He can say whatever he wants. Ill do my talking from Round 1. I am going for the KO. I dont see the need to go the distance and I dont want it to. Im going to set a fast pace from the start and Ive put the work in to make sure I can maintain that pace for as long as I need to.Bellew said he doesnt believe Flores respects him, despite his words. He says he respects me, but I know he doesnt, Bellew said. His playboy mates think I am an easy touch, but when he gets in the ring and I hit him with 10-ounce gloves on, hes going to feel it. Hes going to look across the ring at me and think, He looks a bit chunky, a bit flabby, but trust me, when I hit him for the first time hell think, What was that? The same thing Makabu thought.Flores must have some respect for Bellew, however. He traveled to England weeks ago rather than wait until the week before the fight so he could get used to the time change and to make sure he is fully adjusted. That appears to indicate that he is taking Bellew seriously. If he gets by me, then congratulations to him because this is the best version of BJ Flores thats ever been, so if he beats me then hes a real guy, Flores said. But I really feel that [Saturday] is my night. Im not worried about his predictions or his attempts to rile me. Its not going to work.Bellew, however, believes differently. Its not trash talk. Its brutal truth, he said. On Saturday night Im going to put it to bed. ' ' '
