Panerai launches Radiomir Officine PAM01385 limited edition, inspired by the 1935 prototype Panerai has an interesting history as a watch brand. While the brand has been around for over a century, for much of that time it produced watches exclusively for the military, to the point where many of their horological developments were considered military secrets. It wasn’t until 1992 that they entered the commercial market, and it wasn’t until 1997 that one of the things that started it all, the Radiomir watch, became publicly available. Now, Panerai debuts a reinterpretation of the early military Radiomir prototype from 1935. This is the Panerai Radiomir Officine PAM01385 Limited Edition.
Surprisingly, Radiomir has changed very little in almost 90 years. Putting it next to the new 2023 Radiomir, there are a lot of similarities. The cushion-shaped case, tapered crown and sandwich dial are all key design elements that have stood the test of time.
Of course, there have been some developments over time, such as the structure of the sandwich dial becoming more streamlined and now only having two layers. The dial features a soft brown tone that pairs perfectly with retro-style beige luminous hour markers and 12/3/6 Arabic numerals. Its display is very clear and has an understated military aesthetic.
The Radiomir was originally developed for the military in 1916, although the prototype that inspired the model dates from 1935. Today, we tend to think of the Radiomir as Panerai’s dress watch offering, as it was replaced by the Luminor as Panerai’s premier dive/military watch in the 1970s. However, I can easily imagine such a watch being worn on the wrist of a uniformed officer in the 1930s/40s or even today.
As for the movement inside, it’s a hand-wound P.6000 movement with a 3-day power reserve. The manual winding aspect of it leans towards the traditional concept of a watch as it is a more traditional form of winding. Winding your watch regularly creates a deeper connection between you and your watch.
